So what is a widget? In short, a widget is a piece of code (normally javascript) that you add to your blog template. The code displays the widget for all visitors to see. A widget is a great way of adding functionality and content to your blog.
There are 1000's of widgets available, and most are free to use on your blog. Widgets, I love 'em! I get most of my Widgets from widgetbox.com. They have loads of cool widgets for your blog and even allow advanced users to create their own widgets, but that's a different post for later date.
Here's an example of a Widget I use on my iPod Blog [doipod.com]. This widget displays the latest 'Free Weekly Downloads on iTunes', perfect for visitors, and a reason for them to bookmark the blog.
Cool huh? There's more, each widget can be customised. You can change the size, the colours used and many widgets will have unigue customisation option specific to that widget.
The hardest thing about using Widgets is decided which widgets present the greatest value to your blog readers. It's easy to use TOO MANY widgets on your blog. Keep them relevant!
